In 2005, the Regional Government of Catalunya announced plans to locate a new airport in the town of Alguaire, which is near Lleida, Spain. This location is roughly two hours drive from Barcelona, the capital of Catalunya. This will be an international airport with the capability to handle regional airplanes carrying up to 150 passengers.
This will be a major milestone for this area. It will also make it much easier to travel into this area of Spain which is off the known and beaten path of Spain's main industry, tourism.
I, in my most humble opinion, find that the northeastern corner of Spain to be absolutely beautiful. Having this airport in this locale, will enable one to easily travel into the heart of the Catalan countryside. From this location, the driving time to Mediterranean beaches will be about 1.5 hours away and the tallest peaks of the Pyrenees Mountains will be about 1.5 hours away. The driving time to France and Andorra will be roughly 2 to 2.5 hours at the most. This is a very central location to start your vacation in the Catalan Region of Spain.
